What do you guys recommend for trials use: alivio rear hub or lx silent? I've managed to find in my country in some stores lx silent hubs. People said it's best to choose the alivio hub because it's cheaper and newer than lx, but i'm thinking that lx is by far more reliable that alivio. What's your verdict?
p.s.: don't say to buy a chris king or anyother hub coz i'm on budget (these are my only options). Thx.

get the lx silentclutch -without a doubt!!!!
i can not urge you to do this strongly enough! the alivio hubs are really, really weak! i stripped the inside of my alivio within two weeks (it was brand new-came with my bike) if you have a look at the bikes we use, a fair number (including me) use the silentclutch.
but beware... don't let someone sell you a standard lx hub (this uses the same ratchet/tooth mechanism as the alivio and will break in equal record time!) make sure you are getting the SILENTCLUTCH version!!! if you're not sure which one you're about to buy, then just remember that the silentclutch's have a sort of 'bulb' on the main hub body (see the pics of our bikes) whilst the standard alivio only had a typical cylindrical/straight body.
the silent clutch mechanism is far superior and will last you for ages! it uses a series of rolling pins that sit horizontally around the freehub body. (as opposed to the ratched/tooth -which will break) each rolling pin has a small grove that it will fit into when the wheel is turning, however when you want to engage the hub (pedal) the pins slide out and stop the freehub body from rotating . this is a really good mechanism, an it works!
where abouts are you? and can you tell me where you are going to get the silentclutch from? because i will probably buy a second one for myself (as a spare- cause these things are almost inpossible to find! -i couldnt believe u had!!) .
if you find that the so-called 'silentclutch's' are actually just ordinary lx hubs, then steer clear. you may want to look into a hope bulb, RB tractor, or (do some reading first, but this thing could be sweet) the new middleburn hub...
hope this helps.

ps, please let me know where ur getting the silentclutches from!

I'm from Romania, SE Europe (lol the distance between as is huge). Thanks for your advises. Yes, i'm talking about lx silent clutch, the one with 36 engagement points, totally silent. I've hold such hub at a store in my hand and it seemed a bit heavy, but i was amazed by the effect of quick engagement and its overall quality.
Thx for the answers, now i can go buy myself this hub and dt spokes for the rim as well.

would your store ship them (or parts for them) overseas?

I don't know, i'll ask tomorrow if they can ship parts. But i warn you the transport cost are huge because of the weight and long distance. It may double the cost of the hub and the number of hubs i've seen is about 10 or so, so it's rather limited.

Hey also save up for a new hub in about 6 months cos thats about the time it takes for trials riders to blow them up, they are a great hub but a little heavy and WONT last but they still kick any other shimano hub by far! Just save up a bit of money for a hub that will last eg.middleburn, king, hope etc etc Peace
