(i was jsut looking in some booklet i was given at school and it looks like you pay big bucks for 3 megapixels and 10 X optical zoom ) Alex

Edit - Alex Just Beat Me To It, Here Goes Any Way
1 mega pixel = 1 million pixels = 1 million little dots making up the photo. 4.2 Mega Pixle Camera would have 4200000 dots/pixels that make up the photo.
Optical V Digital Zoom - Optical zoom gives a much higher quality shot because it is done with lenses. Digital zoom is just like geting a picture already on your computer and just use the zooming in tool, it causes lower picture quality.
If you want the Ducks Guts get as many MegaPixles as possible with as biger as posible Optical zoom. You will get cheaper as the mega pixles drop and the optical zoom gets smaller and the digital gets grater.
Hope it all made sence.

dad got a kodak one for like 990 and its got 4mega pixels and takes up to 5 mins of crap quality vids and 3x optical zoom and 3.3x digi which makes it 10 all together. i reckon you don't need much better than this and i think they're cheaper now. all sony have going for them is the brand name, and maybe a bit more reliability, but there's not much difference in the quality of pics or how easy it is to take them (well not that i've noticed). so yeah no need to spend more than a grand and i reckon you could spend way less and still get a pretty good one. I have to reduce the size of my photos all the time anyway and plus 4 megapixels you can print poster size photos, and you dont really need that.

that sounds pretty fucking good but i dont know much about dv cams. i think all those brands are good its all up between personal preference and maybe little features you'll never use anyway. the sony one'll be more expensive.

HOLD YOUR HORSES!!!
personally, (and especially seeming as though you're primarily using the still photos on the web) i would not worry too much about the mega pixles or optical zoom for that matter either!
reason:
whilst i agree digi zoom it sh1te house, you dont really need 10x optical zoom. -since when have you been THAT far away from someone riding trials??? if i was getting a camera (and i am soon) i would be looking at something with around 3x (cheaper but still functional).
also, the higher the megapixles, the greater the size of the file/photo it takes. a 4 megapixle photo can take up as much as 3-5MB -which really sucks for web stuff (even if u do scale it down -which would defeat eh purpose of takking it at such high quality anyway!!). i agree with al, in that i would recommend around 3 mega pixles, with an absolute minimum of 2 megapixles if money becomes a problem. -dont go lower than 2, and there's really no need going higher than about 4.
however, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING -especially if u'll b using the camera to take 'action' shots of trials riding, is the shutter speed, and also the 'shutter delay' (or what ever you like to call it). why? because most of the cheaper cameras out there have either really slow shutter speeds (even at their fastest setting) and the large majority of cameras also have huge shutter delay -this is where there is a gap in time from when you press the button, to when the photo is actually taken (its not instant like in a normal film camera). but some of the more expensive models actually have NO DELAY, and trust me, its worth finding one that does. its nearly impossible to hold a trials move for long enough, or to time it well enough to allow for shutter delay, so make sure (this is by far the most important thing!-if ur using it for action shots) u get a camera that when u press the button it will take the photo at the same time (with no pause b4).
lenses can also make a difference, -i know the sony lenses (think theyre called 'carl zeiss' or something) are really well renowned, as are the cannon lenses.
hope this helps a bit
-charlie

i thought mine had a huge delay hting. then i realised u just gotta half press the button so it auto focuses and then fully press it down and its instant.

Hey Dan,
I bought a fuji digital still camera before leaving for the states. I was interested in buying a digital video camera so I could film riding. I did however want to be able to take high quality stills that I could blow up and print.
My fist problem was that there was and I believe still is no digtal video camera that can give you stills any better than 720 x 980. You can get this kind of resolution from a $20 cam in the toy section at k-mart. It's not even 1 megapixel.
I ended buying a 6mega pixel digital camera which takes high quality videos only limited by the space on your card. on a 256meg card I can get 7 minutes of high res video with sound.
If you are taking photos only for the net a digtal video cam like alexes will take perfect pics provided you don't want to blow them up or print them.
If you want to take pics you can print you need at least 2 megapixels which can be had fairly cheaply and if you are taking photos of products for your website get a camera that has a good macro (close up) function and a flash. Don't be fooled by digtal zoom either cause you can zoom in digitally on your comuter as much as you like. Digital zoom means nothing. Like everyone has said only worry about optical zoom.
Personally if I was going to be filming lots of riding and only taking photos for the web I'd go the video cam.
Good luck,
André
