This is mostly for Joel M-R I guess. I ended up taking it because it was pretty wrecked. The fork was bent so the wheel wouldn't spin but surprisingly the wheel was nearly true. I managed to bend the fork back to a reasonable angle (thank god for steel) and that was about enough to make it rideable, other than air in the tires. I went for a ride around Lake Burley Griffin today which took me about an hour because I'm a fat bastard but it rode well. It is fast but I think it can go a lot faster because it's squeeky and friction all over the place. I won't make it a fixie and I don't even think I will make it single speed because I like the luxury of coasting every now and again and riding for long distances with hills means I'm too lazy to go really hard. Would it be alright if I came around sometime soon, like next Friday or something (whenever suits you) and we could play around with things? I will bring my old XC bike and change the cranks and ring over. We could go for a ride or trials ride after or something. Anyway, here is a pic of the beast. P.S. My neck and balls hurt.

 woohoo !
I noticed it had gone when I cycled to Cog yesterday. You should bring it around, and you should consider throwing a freewheel on the back. It will go so much quicker with 5kgs of stuff taken off.
Nice find.

tell me when you're free and i'll call you to tee something more precise up. i think changing gears would be nice, freewheel = single speed correct?

freewheel does = single speed. It's good though, seriously. much better. People don't realise how fast they can go up hills when they don't have a choice.
I have a free freewheel for you, for 1/8" chain. Very nice ones to be had for $25 around the place (chains that is). Those cranks will have to go I'm afraid, they're the one-piece type I warned you about. That front brake looks baller.

yeah get rid of that too. Get rid of everything dude. Simplicity. If I can ride my malvern star fixie for a month without touching the front brake, I'm going to take it off. Scaring myself.
Also, I can't really remove the freewheels off those wheels, my vice isn't good enough, take it to bike culture (O'connor) or the lyneham shop, they'll do it in 30sec for nothing (especially if you buy a tube or chain or w/e at the same time).

I took off a heap of shit including back brake and that front derailluer and semi-fixed the headset problem so it's running a hell of a lot smoother. Give me a call when you are free if you like because most likely i will be free as well.
Oh, and i'm not really sure on the gearing i'm running at the moment but i think it's around 32:12 or something. I don't think i really want to go any lighter but i think i will go single speed. does this leave me with any options for rear freewheel? I assume it does because of bmxers.

the smallest freewheel you can get on there is a 16t, which works out to a 42t out front to keep your ratio. A pretty common big ring size for mtb, or inner ring size for road. I run a 42t on my dura-ace cranks on my weekend fixie.

Might need to use the angle grinder on my current set up then because my big ring on my old xc bike, that i was going to use the cranks/bb/pedals from, was previously used as a bashring. We could grind away at least the outer ring, maybe the outer two rings or the outer and inner without sacrificing strength. I think my inner ring is 42 so maybe my ratio is 42:12? I don't know.
Anyway, i guess before i come around to yours i should buy a new chain and get them to remove the cluster?

42/12 is a pretty big gear to push around. I think 42/16 is still pretty ambitious for use with flat pedals. I run a 42/14 on my fast fixie, with a bailout 16t freewheel on the flop side, and run 40/16 on my dodgy fix which PV wants to sleep with.
I have a set of 4-bolt cranks/BB with steel rings which I bought for this purpose BTW, you can have them for a very very low price if you need them.
Buy a 1/8" chain and get someone to remove the freewheel yeah. Anytime after tuesday is fine. Tuesday evening is fine.
