Okay, so i know this isn't really a "general board topic" but i dont think many people check the other pages too regularly.
Im finally getting a chain guide on my dirt jumper/pure frame. its running truvative hussefelt cranks and im getting an aireal industries guide, but, what im wondering is... if i decide to put my middleburns onto this frame, will the aireal chainguide still work with those cranks?? obviously i'd have to get another cog/spider or something...?
also, any idea how much my bt 5 frame would be worth second hand? anyone hypothetically interested?
thanks guys,
ps, im leaving on thursday morning, so please post replies as soon as possible!

is this a spider-mounted chainguide or a frame-mounted one? You can get the same 4-bolt pattern spider for middleburn cranks.

all current chainguides mount to the fame, you will need a BB mounted one because your echo is not ISCG compatible. if you wanted to run a bashy, you would have to run a spider otherwise there is nothing to mount the bashy too, if you were just running a bouble roller type thing with no bashy it should work fine without a spider if you just ran an uno chainring.

just realised something, make sure the cranka rm clears the rollers and bolts if you are going with a uno ring, it should be fine but i can't confirm this.

okay, so i ran into some major problems with this one! the stays on the echo frame are way too wide to fit a chain guide... which means ive decided to do one thing... build a new bike (yes, to all the critics out there who feel i prefer to make bikes rather than ride them, you're right -for now anyway... Truth is I really want to get back into the riding but i need a bike i can ride to uni every day and really dont want to have 2 separate bikes... hence this solution.... comments/ideas please! I got some new springs into my oldschool z1's so they're running as if they were new again (about bloody time actually) and i was thinking of building them into a DMR trailstar frame... ive been told these are fairly good and that the geometry would be suited to shorter commuting along with some freeride stuff... can anyone think of a better frame to get for about $500? as far as parts goes, i was thinking of using the rear wheel from my BT (king in a dx32) but obviously i want a few gears if im going to be riding it further than the end of the street... which leads me to my next question... can you put a cassett (shimano etc...) onto a King iso disc hub? or does it have to be a cassett made up from selected individual king cogs? What would be a good size for the front chain ring? (ill probably just have one up front and then a chain guide) AND what modifications will i have to do to my middleburns (with trials spider) to get them to run with a chain guide on this frame? ie, are there any middleburn parts that i'll need to order? does anyone know a good bike shop/ resident expert mechanic (aka joel MF equivalent) in brisbane where i can get all this done (really dont want my headset damaged in the process!) finally... im going to be selling a bit of stuff but don't know what its worth... any guestimates on these things?: bt raven5 frame (excellent cond.) rear wheel mavic 521dh rim with silent clutch hub (perfect condition) echo pure frame brisa bar/stem (stock size) 14 and a half spokey tokies 1 brand new, ready to use hs-33 (right hand lever, calipers, evo mount) cable is easily long enough to use as rear... 1 as new hs-33 with 4 bolt mounts and/or evo kit (left hand lever for rear use) thanks guys, appreciate the help and advice!! charlie

the trailstar is an awesome frame and lasts forever. The king ISO takes gears of course. You'll need a spidered cassette eg deore XT or (and this is probably better for a street bike) a shimano ultegra. the spidered cassette has the sprockets riveted to a carrier and so doesn't dig into the alloy driveshell.
the middleburn trials spider is a 58mm bcd which means it takes a maximum 26 tooth chainring. Get onto Peace and get another spider. I can swap it over or any bike shop. Use a 4-bolt spider for maximum compatibility with modern mtb dogshit !

holy fucking hell i need to pay more attention to what i am doing, lost 2 replies so far.
i've been using for the riders as an online shop for a while, fortheriders.com and they have always been great. they have a shop front in brissy somewhere.
michael at FTR does custom chainguides but in my opinion you would be better off to run just a 2mm thick plate alloy bashy type thing on the inside of the ring, gives a bit more security than nothing, don't have the clearance issues of a full on chainguide and will be easier to make/have made and much cheaper.

another vote for the dmr frame here, nothing but praise for them. they have the geo fairly dialed, the price is right and they don't look bad either. i rode one around for a few weeks before i bought my kona and have regretted not buying it ever since, top frame.
the advice in my above post was mostly based on if you were to keep the middleburn trials bashy, if you are going to go for a new middleburn spider and bigger ring, then you may also be able to use an off the shelf chainguide, or have a custom one made by michael.
i really don't know.

hmm, ok, thanks.... just went onto www.middleburn.co.uk/spiders.htm and there's 6 types to choose from... so i have a few new questions about the drivetrain setup: im basically just a bit confused about what spider to get, to use with which chain guide(brand and size), to be used with which chainring (brand and tooth size for this one too) (so three parts to that one... advice? just saw some other frames online... santa cruz jackal, and the da bomb frames... any advice on those ones? i dont want it to be too heavy... also, JMF, i take it that you mean the cassette from my old trials wheel will therefore work on the king hub without ripping it up? (i think it was a shimano HG road cassette)... emailed those guys from FTR, thanks for the heads up joel, looks like a good shop! charlie

also... and ideas for pricing my old stuff?
bt raven5 frame (excellent cond.) rear wheel mavic 521dh rim with silent clutch hub (perfect condition) echo pure frame brisa bar/stem (stock size) 14 and a half spokey tokies 1 brand new, ready to use hs-33 (right hand lever, calipers, evo mount) cable is easily long enough to use as rear... 1 as new hs-33 with 4 bolt mounts and/or evo kit (left hand lever for rear use)
anyone interested inbuying it too?

well it depends on what sort of chainguide you want to use. It's a pretty broad term. I would suggest using a spider-mounted one which is essentially a bashring. Most of these will use the 4-bolt spider. 4-bolt is the pattern used by truvativ, shimano, everyone nowadays on mtb.

does the aireal chainguide mount to the spider? im a bit confused.... the only other alternative is a frame mounted one (somewhat like a front derailluer right?).. if thats the case then yeah i'd probably use a spider mounted one...
prices for parts?

AFAIK all actual chainguides mount to the frame ( chainguide being the thing with a boomerang, rollers etc), either on international standard chainguide mounting tabs (ISCG) or are just clamped between the frame and the BB cup.
try and steer clear of the dabomb frames, they are cheap, they geo is pretty average and out dated.
the santacruz frames are, from all accounts great, although expect to pay about 900 bucks for one if you buy locally.

okay guys, update.... got a 4 bolt spyder from peace and im buying a Santa cruz chamelion frame this week I called into the shop front of FORTHERIDERS and it's the sweetest shop! just like a smaller version of mal's, only the guys are all really helpful and nice becuase the frame has horizontal dropouts and im going to run singlespeed, it means i dont even need a chainguide so problem solved! As soon as the frame comes into the shop im going in to build it with the guys there so will hopefully have pics to post soon... got a few more questions tho... really just about prices for stuff im selling... I put up a post on observedtrials.net with some stuff im selling, but i dont really know how much it's worth... any ideas? 1.Echo Pure Stock frame (silver) 2.BT Raven 5 Frame (black) -only ridden about 20 times! 3.Middleburn pro trials spider (red) with 21tooth middleburn chainring 4.Brisa Bars and brisa stem (stock) 5.Truvative Hussefelt cranks 6.Magura HS-33 Brake (rear, used for about 5 rides, never crashed, mint condition with plaz, evo mounts included if necessary) 7.Magura HS-33 Brake (BRAND NEW, never installed, and hose is original length so can easily be used as a rear brake if you turn the lever upsidedown, evo mounts also included) 8.HS-33 4 bolt mounting kit (means you dont have to use evo mounts) 9.Basic stock fork (came as stock on a Raceline Rhino... not an awesome fork by any means, but would be fine for someone looking to get into trials) 10. Rear wheel (built by rowan himself!) (mavic dh521 rim, silentclutch hub, never been trued -because it's never needed doing!) thanks guys!
