i guess this is for joel more than anybody else: i just went to put some kevlar bead roadie tyres on my beater, they won't fit. they are a few years old, 700c and no matter how hard i tried, they would not come close to fitting on my rims. is my beater likely to have odd sized rear wheels? if so do tyres still come in larger sizes? i'm clueless here

your wheels are 27" wheels. The bead seat diameter of 700c tyres is 622mm, for 27" tyres it's 630mm. You won't be able to mix the two sizes. Mal's has 27" tyres for $15 which aren't too bad. Most 27" tyres will be cheap.
your rim will probably have 27 x 1 1/4 on it somewhere to denote the size.
