oh dear. Yes you'll need a spacer under the driveside cup. But that will increase your chainline. Maybe you could just leave it alone and hope for the best. It's bodgy but it'll work. If you come across another BB for a 68mm shell then you could put that in instead.
Hey that's great news that it rides! About the shifting, you have to adjust the threaded barrel down near the toggle chain (at the hub) until they all line up. Your 3 speed shifter is indexed to the hub, which has three gears, but in between each gear there is nothing, it freewheels both ways. You just have to adjust the cable until it works.
As a guide, put the shifter in the slackest gear (the highest, 3rd). The cable is kind of slack now right? Well it should only be a tiny bit slack. Tighten (or loosen) the cable using the threaded adjuster (at the hub) until it has almost taken up the slack in 3rd gear. Thats should be approximately right. You can fine tune it. I'd recommend putting some tri-flow or other bike lube into the shifter and onto the chain which goes into the hub.
Congratulations!

mmm ... bike lube ... would "rock "n" roll" lube work (for the shifter)

not really. That's a waxy stuff. Oil would be better. I use tri-flow. But oil is fine. It's all steel after all. Wipe the oil off the outside when you're done oiling the inside - Joel

I played around with that adjusting bolt thingy ... and I finally got the hang of it. And now the 3 gears are working well.
Thanks so much for all the help.
