no i dont think you should ever move to front freewheel really . the best hub you can get is a chris king if you can afford it, not cheap, and not necessary for begginers . a good hub to start with would be a shimano lx silent clutch, but if you end up being very hard on freehubs a chris king wouild be the way . another option would be an RB designs tractor hub . i am not sure about the strength but i am pretty sure they are good, and also good because they have straight pull spokes which make your rim stronger i think . somebody back me up on this or say im wrong, thanks . a good rim for somebody who is hard on it would have to be an echo rim i think, or otherwise some king os DH rim(or at least something strong, possibly drilled out) by sun ringle or mavic . ask your bikeshop about these brand rims and strength and whatever you want . i am not too sure about spokes, i just use whatever spokes the bikeshop uses to lace the rim and hub ... cool! cya .

I rate my front freewheel setup above my old silent mush setup. Just keep the freewheel tight. See post in tech section.
Mavic 521's are proably one of the strongest rims out there in a nice weight range. Id go with one of them or a dx32 if you want wide.
