hey guys,
does anyone know if its at all possible to make a chain guide (for my street bike?) was thinking about the '2 rollers, one above and one below the chainring' design...anyone know if there are going to be any major hurdles if i try and build one?

Just try and make one. You'll discover the hurdles as you go along. Then, if anyone ever wants to try anything similar, you can share your advice with them.
Unless you have a specific problem with the chain dropping off the ring though, it's probably unnecessary. You can mount a front derailleur over it as if you were running three rings, and just lock it in place. This will keep the chain from doing anything too disastrous.

AFAIK it's fairly easy to make something like you described. just get a 3mm sheet of whatever you want to make it out of, cut out the boomerang shape, drill the hole in the centre for mounting the guide between the BB and the frame then drill the holes in each end for mounting the rollers. maybe make the roller mounting holes sort of long and thin so you can move them around a bit incase you didn't measure it out prefectly.
to make the hole for mounting you can either use a hole saw if you have one big enough or use the biggest drill bit you have and file it the rest of the way (could be there a while).
the boomerang shouldn't cost you much at all, the expensive bit will be the rollers, i think they're about $20 each from fortheriders.com

yeah, thinking i might give it a shot. although i'll try and make the rollers themselves on the lathe. is there any metal lining the inside of the rollers (where the chain caontacts it), or are they usually just completely plastic?

they're just plastic with bearings in the middle
