Hey all, i guess this question is directed at joel more than anyone, but anyways, im building up a singlespeed roadbike to commute on and i was just wondering what size chainring and sprocket you would recommend. Its not really hilly on the way to work so i just want something that wont spin out too quick. Oh, and its not fixed either

Hey Adam. I run 42/16 on my fixed and I find that a good allround gear, have to stomp it up the hills but I can hold good pace on the flats and dont spin out easily on the downs. You'd be a fair bit fitter than me so you should have no troubles with this gear. Joel will probably recommend a higher gear but if your not running fixed I'd go lower and just spin its more efficient and you wont arrive at your destination so sweaty.

42/16 or 44/16 are good gears for which chainrings are easily available. This is on 27" or 700c (road size) wheels.

Thanks for the help. i think i will try 42-16, probably better since i have only got 170mm cranks hahahaha! i was going to run it with a cassette wheel and just space it out. My cranks are shimano 600's in 130 bcd so i hope i can get a chainring for them

130 bcd is standard road stuff. Should be able to get at any bike shop but it will be all ramped and pinned if you know any old bmx shops you should be able to get a nice cheap BMX sprocket in that size and then you can run a wide chain!

Ahem, inner rings aren't ramped or pinned. A 42 is fairly common, shimano 105 or ultegra. Those are nice cranks btw, Andre has a pair - Joel
