so, I have a 16t surly sprocket, 3/32" width (basic BMX or 8 speed chain) and probably a couple of spacers, barely used. Quality sprocket. If you have a basic shimano hub you'll be fine using a regular sprocket though, except the chain will fall off...l

yeh, my mate sgot a basic shimano hub.
dont really understand what you said ... : "If you have a basic shimano hub you'll be fine using a regular sprocket though, except the chain will fall off...l"
do you mean that the surly cog wont fit the shimano hub and that he'll have to use a regular cog, and if he uses a regular one the chain will slip off ?

surly sprocket will fit the shimano hub. Shimano hubshells are steel, which means you can use the narrower "regular" sprocket which comes out of a cassette, or with a single speed kit. However sprockets designed for shifting only have half a tooth, for shifting reasons, and the chain is more likely to come off. This is what single speed sprockets change, they have tall teeth which keep the chain on and wear more evenly.
