i just recieved an email from the corc president, saying
We have spoken previously about a permeant trials area at Stromlo and I have confirmed with the venue manager that now is the time to be getting stuff. With the development of the Gungahlin Drive Extension they have lots of rocks and some pipes to get rid of - this could easily be used for a permanent trials area. Let me know what you need, want, would like and how we could put it all together and we will go from there.
i have a few ideas but would like alot more to make a really great trials park so that it might help get the worlds and make the sport bigger and better. craig

Rocks and Pipes are great Craig. They are good permanent things that don't rot or corrode. Get heaps. If you need my help I'm eager. I think I'll be riding there every day!

sounds like teh sweetness. With the dirt and road crits being held there over the summer there will be a lot of people there a couple of evenings a week. Good exposure if someone happens to be riding there at the time!

There's some xc races starting there soon, maybe use the CORC calendar to tie in some demo's or comps. There might be the possibility of storing stuff on site, Anthony would know. Oh yes a great xc race (I'm a director) on Sunday, Kowen Club course Sutton road. This course goes predominantly downhill and most of the rest is really straight and smooth, I set the course and I'm amazed at this too. cheers Jack

I guess the main thing is we dont want it to be easily vandalised, nor do we want it to look like a junkyard.
Pipes + Rocks + Sleepers or some sort of hard wood balance beams an such would be good.

i haven't ridden in a fair while (don't even own a bike at the moment) but i intend to get back into it again soon, so i'm happy to volunteer some time to help out with this thing if/when it's needed

This would be sweet. As PV said it needs to not be an eye sore. Think of the one at Mt Beauty it's great but It looks like a tip when its not being used. What would be involved in creating a world class facility? what were the courses like at the worlds Craig? what are the uci regulations for course layout?
In 10 years when the trees come back this is going to be such a sweet facilty. Hell it already is. If it can host the worlds it will only be better. Just have to make sure it gets designed right from the start. I'm willing to lend a hand.
Also It would be good to also think about beginers. So rather than having a park with only elite level sections have some small stuff too to encourace other riders to have a go.

the main thing that i was wanting to do was get some natural stuff happening cause novice to elite sections can be made, man made stuff can always be brought in. So i took a few photos yesterday mainly where we could have the natural sections, i was thinking along some sort of creek/ water run off area that we could dam off or something, like belco and also have rocks in the dry, the problem with concrete pipes is grafiti, to fix that someone could paint murals all over them it make it look hidden or something, but again more can be brought it, i think that focusing on rocks and boulders at this stage would be best. I still want to have concrete pipes, most likely broken ones, depends what we get. I would also like to keep each type of section in a different location, not too far apart though. In terms of construction last years bc shit all over the worlds. things were breaking left right and centre. there were 12 sections all up each class did 8 sections in different orders and each section was changed, they had 2 rock sections, 2 concrete pipe sections, 2 log sections, 1 side of a hill/creek section, 2 demo kit sections, 1 pallet section, 1 spoolsection, 1 coppers logs section. I want the park to be enjoyed by all levels, like if the rocks get used and water and stuff then even cross country riders can ride through for comps for the technical side of things. well thats a bit writing :S

We could ask Baxter to airbrush the concrete pipes!
seriously though it would prrobably be a good idea to take whatever concrete pipes you can get. Those things are expensive new so even if you decide where the pipe sections will be and then get them to dump them there.
Also if the rocks dont end up there well just end up with another hawker rocks somewhere else. Or maybe even more rocks at hawker?

I would be more than happy to pitch in some of my time to do this - the best advice that i can think of for now is just take anything that you can get, and make what you can with what you have as you get it....
Using pipes and rocks are a great start, but placement of the stuff is going to be critical. I would advise that to make a good park, the most important things are going to be making the ojects adaptable, so that they can be used in heaps of combinations - and to make each object safe enough (meaning permanently stable) and long lasting.....
