Where do you get it: on roads, cracks in pavements, pretty much anywhere. i scrape it out with a knife or something and melt it into a ball. How do you put it on: to put it on just rub it on with your hand so you can see a bit of black. to get it perfect you have to experiment yourself with different types of tar and different amounts etc.
PS or you could just get plazmatic pads off craig for 20 bucks

flip the bike upside down, get the tar, (its sorta like a really soft rock, or really hard gum) and press fairly hard and drag it along the rim and it'll leave a bit of a black mark. you dont need too much, cause its a neusance(sp?) to get it off afterwards.

Tar is crap! it wears of and actually makes you worse at riding because you dont know how to use your bike when you brakes arent working as good! Grind is the future!!!! nothing beats it i have done it all and a nice roughish grind is the best!! keeps pads clean and grips to all brake pads! do it, do it now! i used a file first but it wasnt rough enough so i got out the dremel and used the rough sand paper tool! its been sooo so good! Grind Peace

Yes I agree - The grind is the way. I used to run tar and plaz but you cannot rely on your brakes all the time coz who knows when a bit of water will get on the rim or dirt will stick to the tar and when it does your brakes will be really crap or non-existant. When tar gets wet it turns to oilly sludge. Sure if you have a grind and it gets wet it will be affected but it will still work. And when riding in the dirt i have noticed that the brakes aren't affect when you have a grind.

OKAY, here we go, you have a few options for better brakes. Clean the rear rim heaps! Some use window cleaner like windex, some use a degreaser like turps, some probably use somthing else, use one of these, spray it all over your rim/a rag and then wipe it off, repeat this untill you end up not putting any more black shit on the rag. If this dosnt help you can try tar as it is easy removable and dosnt wear out your pads as much as a grind. Once you have some tar put it on like you use an rubber to rub out lead pencil. Just keep doing that till you see a bit of a browny black colour on the rim, then move on, keep doing it all the way around. Some do it only on one side of the rim, some do it on both. Try some stuff out and see what you prefer. HOW TO FIND TAR Every 5th??? line in a concrete footpath is black, this is tar, rip it out with some pliers/a stick (you only need a tiny bit) and its ready to go, you will find the more dark black it is the better. Other wise you can buy tar but there is no need. Its called roof flashing somthing. Also we need to work on your posting skills there is..............no neeed....................to DO..........this.......OK?

nah grind it, it keeps you pads clean and it doesnt wear down ya pads that fast! and pads arent too expensive, also you can use any pad on a grind and they will work great. Peace

I PREFER A GRIND, however i dont think a grind or tar is very important untill 1 monthish of riding when you start being able to hop over the edge of stuff if you make it only to the edge. Seb has only been riding for what 4 days? See you on friday.

hey...........................alex...................sorry..............for...............the...............dots....................it...............................is.....................................a.........................habit..................hehe.............neway, as a matter of fact i can hop onto the sides of things and stuff to like bench height, and my brakes slip when i do that and gapping on my back wheel(about a bike length). hehe, i just thought that i would clear that up! (i am not up myself or nething), hehe, remember i have been riding trials for like a month on a norco bigfoot so i guess i found trials easy once i got the right bike . hehe, now my friend wants a trials xept he only just got a kona stuff 3 months ago and he stuffed his kidney coz his brakes slipped and yeah. neway i will do the windex thing. then i will try tar, and then grinding. i really cant be bothered 2 grind just now coz i am a bum. what is happening with the ride on saturday?¿

Sandpaper doesn't really work unless you press really hard and have lots of time to do it and keep on redoing it every couple of days. Borrow an angle grinder, take you tyres of and let the fuckers have it (carefully), and you brakes will thank you.
Also, I don't mean to be a posting nazi, but there is no reason to use (hehe) instead of a full stop.

If you are really that desperate for a grinder, then bring your bikes to my house some night and use mine.
